y do I want to become an athlete so badly I’m willing to write about it?I fell in love with a road cyclist and agreed to marry him. His name is Doug. We live together in Glendale, with our three rescued cats, our lab mutt and six bikes.
Six.
Our bicycle to mammal ratio is one to one. Six mammals. Six bikes.
People think I’m interested in getting fit because he’s
athletic and fit. But, that’s not
really it. The real reason is – I’m a writer and I
love stories. Prior to meeting him
no one had told me stories that made athleticism interesting. My own experiences of trying to play
sports produced humiliating, horrible stories. (Though in retrospect they are perhaps funny stories.) But, Doug tells me stories that make me
curious about being an athlete.
Stories of camaraderie, endurance and competition. Stories that intrigue me. And for the first time in my life I've found myself wondering…am I missing something by being a confirmed sloth.
After all, I was a confirmed bachelor (ette?) before I met him and now I live with and love someone. Turns out it's great. I enjoy being a couple.
Perhaps I would enjoy being an athlete.
So, here I am, writing. I'm sure I'm going to start moving any minute.
